Helloooo friends & happy belated Holidays to everyone + happy early New Years! This year has honestly been crazy, but I’m so thankful for all the ups and downs. I’m thinking of doing a 2019 recap post where I give y’all a life update and talk about how 2019 has been for me and what my goals are for 2020! I honestly still can’t believe 2005 was 15 years ago…. but here we are, and I’m truly at a great point in my life. More to come on that, but let’s jump to what you’re here to see – the best beauty products of 2019.
This year was honestly a whirlwind of new products that were basically just being thrown at us on a daily basis. It’s become really hard to test out new products without wanting the next best thing on the market. The crazy part is, this list doesn’t even include skincare or haircare. I’ve compiled a list of products that I tried out and LOVED this year – there are some that were also used last year, but just think of it as a list of holy grail products that you should check out! This is going to be a long one, so grab a snack & stay awhile 😉
Of course. Of course this would be on my list right? It’s one of the most-raved-about primers in the beauty industry right now, and for good reason. First of all, it’s Tatcha – and they don’t do anything wrong. Second, it really makes your skin look poreless in the places it’s applied. I usually try to apply it to areas where I feel bumps or texture, and it does an amazing job of smoothing out the skin and prepping it for foundation. If you’re looking to splurge on a good primer, Tatcha is the best way to go.
This primer is honestly one of my true loves, and I’ve been using it for a year now. It’s the best primer to make your skin look dewy and fresh, and it also feels great when applied to the skin. When I use this primer with foundations that are more matte, it still makes my face look radiant, providing the perfect balance. It doesn’t get oily throughout the day either, so it’s perfect!
This is also one of the famous primers out there, but it’s a little different. It’s recommended to use this by mixing it into your foundation before you apply it, so that your skin looks airbrushed. I’ve only been using this for a little while, but I’ve already gotten compliments on my foundation whenever I’ve used this. Some people have issues with it being too thick in consistency and say that it doesn’t come out of the bottle. I have noticed this issue with mine too, but I do like the actual product and it definitely does what it says! Is it the Facetune of primers? Let’s hope.
This foundation….. is one of the greatest foundations of all time. I’m not exaggerating – I’m on my third bottle of it, and I intend to repurchase it whenever this one is finished. I absolutely LOVE wearing this foundation to work, fancy events, dinners, hangouts, family events….. basically any event that requires makeup. It’s all in the name – it makes my skin look truly poreless. So many foundations claim to do that and don’t succeed — but Maybelline really knows what it’s doing. They have two different versions of this foundation, one for a more matte look and one for a dewy look. I have the matte one, and the crazy thing is that my skin actually looks very fresh and dewy when I wear it. I’m not sure if it’s the natural oils in my skin or if it’s the foundation, but it never looks oily on the skin. It sinks into the skin and looks totally natural. Definitely one to go pick up if you haven’t already! 10/10.
Ahhhhh, Nars. I’ve spoken about this foundation countless times, but it’s still not enough. The coverage on this foundation is unlike any other that I’ve used. Like most humans, I’ve had some unwanted blemishes and texture on my face that I want to cover for big events. I’ve tried so many of my favorite foundations during those times, and they just haven’t done the job. But enter Nars – it covers up every bump and pimple on your face, and manages to make you look like you’re going to walk on a runway. I kid you not, every time I’ve worn this foundation, someone has asked me what I’m wearing. It’s truly one of the best, and it’s definitely one of my holy grails.
Milani is honestly one of the best drugstore brands – they have amazing foundation, blush, and concealer. This foundation is another cult favorite, and I’ve hopped on the bandwagon. I was browsing at CVS one day and next thing I knew, I was making an impulse purchase featuring Milani. This is an AMAZING foundation that has Nars-level coverage for your texture/blemishes. I’m glad it does, because the foundation claims to have both concealer and foundation, so it should do an incredible job. I still use concealer on top because I’m an extra person, but you really don’t need to! This is a top drugstore foundation for me.
Speaking of drugstore foundations, we can’t forget about this gem from L’Oreal. This foundation came out earlier this year and took the beauty industry by storm. It’s such a great everyday foundation, and I find that I love wearing to events where I’ll be out all day, like work. It does have sunscreen in it, so I don’t ever wear it at night (we don’t want that flashback in pictures). It feels great and super lightweight on the skin, and also has a satin finish so it never looks cakey. L’Oreal is always killing the game.
ColourPop is one of my absolute favorite brands, so when they released a light coverage/BB Cream type foundation, I knew I had to try it. I love wearing BB Creams when I’m running errands or going somewhere quick, just so my face has looks even and glowy, but doesn’t have too much makeup on it. This foundation is SO beautiful and looks so nice on the skin. The coverage is very light, but you can build it up to medium if you add a couple layers. It also has hyaluronic acid, so it’s super hydrating. This is my new fave BB cream!
I’ve definitely talked about this concealer before, but it’s incredible so I can’t help myself. It’s a dupe for the Tarte Shape Tape concealer, which is notorious for its full coverage. I love using this concealer whenever I have dark undereyes and marks on my face that refuse to go away. It has a matte finish, so it’s perfect for those with oily/combo skin!
Funny story, I was in the beauty aisle of TJ Maxx (when am I NOT there) and I spotted this concealer. The Too Faced Born This Way line has such amazing reviews, so I ended up buying the concealer and LOVING IT. I use this every single day (even more than the L’Oreal one) and it gives me such a beautiful finish on my foundation. It’s definitely radiant, but I like that when it comes to concealer. It makes my undereyes look nourished and brighter, and also has great coverage. Go to your local TJ Maxx and buy this baby for $7.99. You’re welcome.
I honestly love every single item from the Fit Me line at Maybelline (you’ll see more on them in this post). This concealer is a great everyday concealer and blends SO easily. I’d say that it has medium coverage and has a satin finish. I always love to throw this concealer in my purse for work in case I need to do any touch ups throughout the day, and I also keep it in my car! It’s so easy to use that you can use your finger to blend it out. A perfect choice for someone who just wants a light concealer that does the job and looks amazing on the skin.
Another TJ Maxx find! I absolutely love this bronzer for a great everyday look. It looks great on fair-medium skin tones, and I’d definitely say add it to your cart if you see it at TJ Maxx. I’d give it an 8/10.
This is has been on my blog SO many times that it’s ridiculous. I love this bronzer palette with all my heart, and not just because it smells like chocolate. It has 4 different bronzer shades, and 2 cream colored powder shades to set your makeup. The 4 bronzer shades are all amazing on the skin, and I tend to just mix a couple of them together to get the look I want. This palette is pretty pricey, but it’s definitely worth it.
I love using bronzers, but my favorite way to contour is using a cream contour. There’s no better way to cream contour than using a concealer! This concealer is under $5, and the darker shades are PERFECT for cream contouring. I usually contour and blend this out with a small brush, and it also blends beautifully. It looks great on the skin, AND it’ll cover up any unwanted blemishes that are in your contour line. WIN WIN.
I got this blush recently, but it’s one of the best blushes I’ve tried lately! It’s very light and not super pigmented, so if you want a fresh, healthy look to your skin, this is the one for you! I usually wear this blush to work because it’s such a natural, barely-there blush. The peach tones in the blush really compliment olive skin tones!
I’ve used this blush for a long time, and it’s the perfect balance of blush and highlight. It’s such a beautiful, glowy texture, and it’s perfect to wear if you want to add some life to your skin. It has this amazing sheen to it and makes your skin look dewy and you don’t even need a highlight on top because it does both for you!
I got this blush trio in my Boxycharm one month, and I really love it! It has three SUPER pigmented blushes that look amazing on the skin. I only use the coral shade in the palette, and a little goes a long way. I usually have to blend it out on my skin so that it doesn’t look insane, but it’s still an amazing blush that gives that perfect illusion of flushed cheeks. This is also a fairly new brand, and they have some incredible products so definitely check them out!
I want to preface this portion of the post by saying that I don’t really love to wear highlight. I prefer looking more natural and wearing a dewy foundation that provides a “glow from within.” But when I do decide to wear highlight on a day or night that I’m really dressed up, I go for Wet n Wild. This is one of the best highlights I’ve ever used, and it rivals luxury highlights. I’ve never felt the need to actually go buy a luxury highlight from Sephora because of this one – so you NEED it in your life!!
I’ve loved this highlighter for a while now, and it’s more at my speed when it comes to glow. To be honest, this is barely even a highlighter. It really just gives the most subtle sheen to your face, and it looks SO beautiful on the skin too. I love dusting this all over my face right after I spray it with setting mist, and it looks INCREDIBLE. This is for all the people who want a natural looking highlight that people won’t be able to see from the moon.
I. LOVE. THIS. SETTING. POWDER. I think it’s actually unhealthy how much I love this setting powder, but it’s proven its worth to me every single time I’ve used it. I use this setting powder under my eyes and all over my face, and I usually bake it for about 1-2 minutes while I do my eyebrows and eyeliner. When I dust it off, my skin looks 10x smoother than it did before, and my pores have totally vanished. I reach for this every single day, even when I’m going out to a fancy event. Maybelline has my entire heart with their Fit Me line.
If you want to set your makeup with a powder that looks like it’s not there, this is the powder for you. It’s virtually undetectable on the skin, and it feels so lightweight and breathable. If you have skin that’s on the drier side, you will LOVE this. This also helps with the barely-there look, and makes your skin look airbrushed and exceptionally flawless. If you choose one thing on this list to splurge on, go for this. Hourglass never disappoints.
This powder is the most unique setting powder I’ve ever used. It has a cooling sensation when applied to the skin, and it feels so hydrating (so it’s especially good for those of you with dry undereyes). It has a satin matte finish, so it’s really geared towards helping dry skin by hydrating it rather than drying it out even more. I usually alternate between this and the Maybelline Fit Me powder, but they both have similar finishes on the skin.
**I have WAY too many lipsticks that I love and use, and if I talked about all of them, this post would be 17 pages long. So I’m just going to talk about my top 5 favorite lipsticks that I use on a regular basis:
Was this even a surprise? This was in my last favorites post, and it will continue to remain in every single favorites post I write. I’ve talked about this lipstick on my Instagram too, and it’s the one lipstick that almost every single person compliments me on. It has the perfect coral pink tone and complements olive-medium skin tones very well. The best part? It’s under $10.
ColourPop does it again with their incredible formulas. Their satin lipstick formula is amazing, because it doesn’t dry down as much as the matte, and it still makes your lips look vibrant and luscious. This color is a light pink nude, and I love wearing it during the spring/summer.
This lipstick is the perfect fall brown nude. Ofra and Colourpop are tied for best lipstick formula in my opinion – they both feel so smooth and hydrating on the lips that it feels like you have lip balm on, which is the best kind of lipstick. Pro tip – wear this lipstick with a pink lipliner underneath!
We all need to have a favorite red lipstick right? The one we take out when we KNOW we need to look good + need it to stay on all night? This is the one. Maybelline’s Super Stay formula does exactly what it says – it stays. Literally. Every time I put it on and then try to take it off, it refuses to come off (even with micellar water). This can be both good and bad, but I choose to see the good. If you need a lipstick that stays on through a battle + looks fierce, you need this!
Because they both do the same, I’m not going to list them out and go through their individual qualities. The Morphe Continuous Setting Mist and Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray are at a tie for my favorite setting spray. They both do amazing things, but the only difference is that Morphe is cheaper ($16). If you’re just getting into setting mists, I’d suggest trying out Urban Decay’s travel size version, which will probably last you a couple months! <3
ANDDDD that *finally* completes my 2019 favorites. I’m sure I’ll keep using these products until the end of time, but I’m still super excited for all the new launches in 2020. In the mean time, I hope everyone has an amazing New Years, and thank you to everyone who has consistently supported Alisha’s Approach! <3
