Milia is something that has always personally plagued my skin, and even though the term is not as “famous” as acne, it’s still something that affects tons of people. Milia are essentially the little bumps that you can see on your skin that don’t exactly look like acne, and just pop up out of nowhere and look like mini cysts on the skin. They can appear on the face, undereyes, and eyelids. This is something I’ve dealt with for years so I wanted to show you guys how to get rid of milia!
CAUSES FOR MILIA
Mainly, milia are caused by dead skin cells building up in your pores, and this can happen for a number of different reasons. This can include not taking your makeup off entirely, not using chemical exfoliants (like AHAs or BHAs), or any kind of trauma to the skin (like laser therapy). Milia can also occur if you’re using too many heavy creams. The good news with milia is that they can go away on their own without using any products, but if you are dealing with them for a while and they don’t seem to budge, keep reading.
HOW TO GET RID OF MILIA ON THE CHEEKS
USE AHAs or BHAs to Get Rid of Dead Skin Cells
If you’ve been following me on IG or Tiktok (or been reading my blog) for a while, you know the importance of having AHAs or BHAs in your skincare routine. This is especially important if you have oily or acne prone skin, because that’s the skin type that is most likely to develop milia. My favorite AHA/BHA products to get rid of milia include:
REN Skincare Ready Steady Glow Daily AHA Tonic
When I initially developed milia, this is exactly what helped me get rid of them. The first time I used the REN AHA Tonic, I saw a visible difference in the morning. This contains an amazing blend of AHA, which means that it will really help to exfoliate the top layer of the skin and get rid of the dead skin cells that have been building up. It also helps to really smooth out the texture of the skin and make it look luminous!
Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Exfoliant
The Paula’s Choice BHA Exfoliant is a cult favorite for a reason. It has 2% salicylic acid, which is amazing for acne prone skin and it will zap that milia right out. Salicylic acid is a BHA, which means it will go deeper into your skin to help unclog your pores and fight acne at the same time! This product is a game changer.
Tula Acne Clearing + Correcting Gel
Tula is one of the most underrated skincare companies. They consistently create incredible products, and my mission is to try out all of them. Currently, my favorite is the Acne Clearing gel. This stuff really works – it has a blend of amazing AHAs to help fight milia, unclog your pores, and smooth out the uneven texture on your skin. I’ve gotten 2 bottles of this already – hopefully that tells you how amazing it is! It’s also great if you have acne scarring because it contains azelaic acid, which is a known acne scar brightener.
HOW TO GET RID OF MILIA ON THE UNDEREYES OR EYELIDS
When trying to get rid of milia on the eyes, this is something you have to be really careful with. You cannot use AHAs or BHAs under or on the eyes. The eye area is extremely sensitive, so you can only use products there that were specifically formulated for that area. The best ingredient to help fight milia on the eyes is retinol! The best way to go is to find a lightweight eye cream that contains retinol because that will really help to fight and get rid of the milia. Here are some great options:
RoC Retinol Correction Eye Cream
This was initially an Amazon find that I fell in love with, but it’s also available at Target! It’s one of the most affordable retinol eye cream options I’ve been able to find and it works wonders. The consistency is super lightweight, and it helps to hydrate the eye contour as well as fight off any free radicals like milia. I use this every single night, and I absolutely love it!
First Aid Beauty Retinol Eye Cream with Triple Hyaluronic Acid
First Aid Beauty is one of my absolute favorite brands, and this eye cream is just like all their other products – incredible. It’s a great option if you have dry undereyes and milia, because it’ll definitely kill two birds with one stone.
Olay Regenerist Retinol24 Night Eye Cream
Olay is a household brand, and for good reason. They consistently have great products at a great price point. This eye cream will do an amazing job at brightening the undereyes, hydrating, and fighting off the pesky little milia on the undereyes.
These are my all time favorite options on how to get rid of milia. I totally understand how annoying those little cysts can be… I mean, they’re not categorized as acne, and they make the skin texture look worse. But these are completely normal and common, and with the help of the right products, you can get rid of them. If they are really bothering you and you don’t want to wait for your products to work, you can visit a dermatologist or esthetician and they can do a painless procedure to extract them.
